Remember when Martin Luther nailed his theses to the door of the church, in part because he no longer believed Catholic clergy exclusively held God's truth? Some leaders of the conservative Missouri Synod Lutheran Church (despite the word "Synod," it's an actual denomination, separate from the more progressive Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) are trying to remove its leader because he (
gasp!) offered a prayer in an ecumenical service and worked with an ELCA pastor in New York City after the September 11 disaster.
What could possibly be wrong with that? "It's against God's word," say the leaders, "and only we can interpret it." Anyone got some theses and a nail?
Wow, demonstrations in college sure have gotten a bit more explicit. We were lucky to see someone break a banana dipped in liquid nitrogen.
