Separation of church and state, anyone?

The police dpartment in Penryn, PA, has voted to refuse to direct traffic for the YMCA's annual triathlon because the YMCA reads Harry Potter books to the children. "In a letter to the township and the YMCA, [the police chief] challenged the integrity of the YMCA, and questioned whether it was 'serving the will of God' in using the books."

Maybe I'm just a hopeless progressive, and setting aside the highly questionable and asinine notion that stories of good and evil are somehow bad for children if they don't include Jesus, I have a question: when did police protection depend on whether the police department agrees with your religion or not? Isn't that exactly what the Constitution is supposed to guard against?
