Permalinks!

The little "#" at the end of this item is a permanent link to this particular item. I've been complaining (mildly) on UserLand's forums for several months that Dave Winer's own Scripting News page has these "permalinks", but that sites other than UserLand's own do not. I never got a response from anyone at UserLand, but they rolled out the feature yesterday, and I found out about it today.

The neat thing is that, since Manila (the Frontier-based system on which this site runs) is a real content management system, adding the "permalink" macro to my news item template now means that every news item has a permalink, even ones posted weeks or months ago. That's cool. I'm thinking in ways like that about redesigned versions of MDJ and MWJ, but since those are produced once and remain static afterwards (they're true publications with issues, not an ongoing work-in-progress like a Web site), there's a little difference. But it's making some interesting connections in my mind.
