The big boys respond to infomercials!

Being a late-night information worker, I've seen infomercials for Orange Glo and Orange Clean for years, along with Power Paste, and the ever-present Oxi Clean. These products all come from Orange Glo international, and the brand has been expanding. Now there is Oxi Clean dishwasher detergent, Orange Clean laundry detergent, Kaboom tile and grout cleaner, and more. The orange products have orange oil (and they do leave things smelling very nice, by the way), the "oxi" products use non-chlorine bleach to whiten and clean.

These things are so profitable that they've moved out of the infomercial and QVC zone. They're sold in regular 2-minute commercials on cable channels, and they're in stores -- Wal-Mart, Bed Bath & Beyond, and who knows where else. That's enough for the big boys -- I just saw a TV commercial for a new Fantastik cleaner with "orange action". It appears SC Johnson (the old "Johnson & Johnson" company) is responding to Orange Glo International by adding orange oil to new versions of Fantastik and Pledge (aerosol or spray), plus an orange-scented Pledge Grab-It dry mop refill. There is no idea so original it can't be co-opted.
