I have been so out of it.

I have been a real space cadet since Tuesday, and there is good reason. I just can't tell you about it yet. I've told some friends and will tell more, because I need to decide how much of my own personal story I'm comfortable sharing with a world that thinks it already knows it. I'm talking to people, I'm getting opinions, and I'm slowly recovering from a couple of really big shocks. It will still take me a while, but I'm no longer dysfunctional like I was on Wednesday and most of Thursday.

Pass on the bass?

Despite a delicious flaky white meat so permeated with natural oil that it's difficult to overcook, the Patagonian Toothfish was mostly left alone for thousands of years, one of just a few species of fish that grows and thrives in the frigid anatarctic waters of the South Atlantic. Several years ago, though, someone had the bright idea to rename it the "Chilean Sea Bass," and since then, diners can't get enough of it. Now, according to Greenpeace and other organizations, the demand is so great that the Toothfish has nearly been fished into extinction. Since much of the fishing is pirate activity, they're urging diners and restaurants to "Take a pass on Chilean Sea Bass." So far, 350 restaurants have agreed to do so, says The Week Magazine. Could this be the first extinction of a much-desired animal due to marketing?

And you wonder why the middle east is tough

I drove by some standard non-denominational fundamentalist church in Oklahoma City tonight, and it had one of those signs outside with a message you can change, like "Special on Corn Dogs" or "Now hiring." But this one said, "USA worries about 'Arab/Muslim' concerns while Israel buries its dead."

What the hell is that supposed to mean? Arabs and muslims should be treated as terrorists until Israel says otherwise? Or no one should be concerned about anyone other than Israelis until the conflict is over? There's something very, very odd about any church even implying that you shouldn't care about some class of people based on their class, no matter what the reason.
