The decline of America

A woman who was lost in the wilderness for two days in Arizona set a small fire to signal a news helicopter, which did see it and did rescue her. She expected the fire to stay small, but it grew and joined with another fire to form the largest in state history, destroying lots of property (or, at least, all the stuff on the property).

Today, the DA announces that the woman will not be prosecuted for starting the fire because, as is obvious to just about anyone, she had no criminal intent to start the fire. A reasonable person thought it would stay contained, she was in life-or-death danger having been exposed for two days, and there's no way a jury would convict her.

Property owners, of course, are incensed, demonstrating at the announcement and demanding that she go to jail. Tell me where America went wrong, where the investigation of any problem stopped being about how to fix it and how to move on but about who to blame. People have to take responsibility for their actions, but accidents do happen. I'm even willing to believe Bush didn't break SEC laws in selling Harken Energy stock -- I just want an investigation.

I want things fixed. Instead, they stay broken and people spend time in jail for it. This is not how a country grows.
