Ah, the magic of headlines
Michael Moore's new film Fahrenheit 9/11 has won the Palme D'or, the highest prize at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival (yes, for the neocons, that's in France).
Here's the AP lede on its story:
CANNES, France - American filmmaker Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," a scathing indictment of White House actions after the Sept. 11 attacks, won the top prize Saturday at the Cannes Film Festival.
And here's the Reuters lede for its story:
CANNES, France (Reuters) - U.S. director Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," a savage indictment of President Bush's handling of Iraq and the war on terror, won the top award at the Cannes film festival Saturday.
Pretty similar, right? Now look at the headlines for the two stories:
- AP: " 'Fahrenheit 9/11' Wins Cannes' Top Prize"
- Reuters: "Anti-Bush Tirade Wins Top Award in Cannes"
(emphasis added)
The AP article refers to Moore's "customary blend of humor and horror," which the warfloggers would certainly read as bias, but the Reuters article calls the film "Moore's diatribe" and implies the film is just propaganda.
The AP article reports the facts without insulting Moore or the film; Reuters somehow couldn't avoid words like "tirade" and "diatribe" for the Palme D'Or winner. Damn foreign liberal media.
