New Education Secretary Speaks Out Against Tolerance

Newly minted Education Secretary Margaret Spellings has declared her opposition to an episode of PBS' "Postcards From Buster" which features two lesbian couples.

"Many parents would not want their young children exposed to the lifestyles portrayed in the episode," Spellings wrote in a letter sent Tuesday to Pat Mitchell, president and chief executive officer of PBS.

"Congress' and the Department's purpose in funding this programming certainly was not to introduce this kind of subject matter to children, particularly through the powerful and intimate medium of television."

Spellings also asked PBS to refund the money which partially funds the program.

Her letter closes with a warning to PBS against running shows in the future which may run counter to the Administration's values. "You can be assured that in the future the department will be more clear as to its expectations for any future programming that it funds."

I hereby declare my opposition to Margaret Spellings and her entire narrow-minded administration, which features many intolerant people.

"Many parents would not want their young children, or anyone else, exposed to the hateful lifestyle portrayed by Margaret Spellings," I wrote in a post to my blog.

"Congress and the Department of Education's purpose in employing a Secretary certainly was not to expose a censorous, intolerant, hate-filled prig to children, particularly through the powerful and intimate medium of government."

I also asked the Department of Education to refund all of my tax money that partially funds Spelling and her intolerant agenda.

My post closes with a warning to Spellings against trying to censor other viewpoints in the future which may run counter to the Administration's values. "You can be assured that in the future, I'll be more clear as to my expectations for any future hate that you spew with my tax funds, not that you have enough Christianity in your venomous body to understand or care."

Gonzales reportedly committed perjury

Yes, that's right: George W. Bush's candidate for Attorney General, the top law enforcement officer in the United States, apparently committed perjury in testifying before Congress about his own confirmation.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed a complaint with the Office of Disciplinary Counsel of the State Bar of Texas requesting an investigation into misrepresentations White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales made in a written response to a question posed to him by the Senate Judiciary Committee which is considering Gonzales’s nomination for Attorney General.

The complaint alleges that Gonzales inaccurately portrayed his role in appearing before a Texas court when President Bush, then Governor of Texas, was summoned for jury duty. Gonzales has claimed that although he appeared in court with the Governor, he merely observed the defense counsel make a motion to strike the Governor from the jury panel and then when asked by the Judge whether the Governor had any views on this, replied that he did not.

In marked contrast, Michael Isikoff, reporting for Newseek, has written that the defense lawyer, prosecutor and judge involved in the case all recall the incident differently. In their version, Gonzales asked to have an off-the-record conference in the judge’s chambers where Gonzales then asked the judge, David Crain, to strike Mr. Bush from the jury, arguing that the Governor might one day be asked to pardon the defendant. Isikoff writes that Judge Crain found Gonzales’s argument “extremely unlikely” but out of deference, agreed to allow the motion to strike, which the defense lawyer then made.

CREW’s complaint alleges that by misstating the facts surrounding the conversation in the judge’s chambers Gonzales may have violated 18 U.S.C. §1001, which makes it a federal crime to make false statements to a congressional committee.

Any Senator who votes for Gonzales despite his excusing and justifying torture of innocent civilians is already an embarrassment to the country. Now, with credible written evidence that the AG nominee perjured himself before this very same Senate, any Senator who votes for him should be disqualified from ever holding any elective office again, if not actually recalled or impeached for gross incompetence.

As long as the wingnuts have 50 votes in the Senate and the Vice President, they don't care what the laws are unless we make them care.
