The lede doesn't quite say it all:

LONDON (Reuters) - The Anglican Church edged closer to a possible schism on Friday after it called on the Canadian and U.S. churches to quit one of its key bodies until 2008 while they reconsider their support for gay bishops.

In case you don't know, Anglicans in the US and Canada are called "Episcopalians." There's more:

The Anglican Church's crisis erupted in 2003 with the ordination of Gene Robinson, the church's first openly gay bishop, in the United States, home to 2.3 million Anglicans.

Traditionalist Anglicans, particularly in Africa, were enraged. They are now considering ways to redraw the Anglican world map to exclude liberal provinces.

Why?

African church leaders fear that if Anglicanism takes a lenient line on homosexuality, its followers will desert its pews for more conservative Christian churches or Islam.

Please forgive me, Anglicans, but fuck that. Do you want your leaders to preach the truth as they understand it, or to put the truth aside to fill the pews?

Sure, many of them probably believe the anti-gay crap (see this chilling Daily Kos diary, for example). But to admit that the primary motivation for schism in the church, for cutting off hundreds of millions of believers, is to avoid having other believers leave because your church isn't hating enough?

It's a strange Bible these people read.
