Jesse Taylor's got it

In an article about wacko Fred Phelps's ongoing brand of hate in the name of his religion, Jesse Taylor of Pandagon writes the single sentence that every non-nutcase needs to repeat whenever these hate-mongers come up.

Guess what? Phelps and the slightly less extreme variants on his ideology (Dominionists, Falwellians, etc.) hate America. The problem with their version of hating America as it relates to the right giving a damn is that very often, it's okay to hate America in that way to them. When they declare that America is rotting from the core outward, and that basic principles of freedom and tolerance render it unworthy of protection in God's eyes, it's not the expression that's the problem.

Slightly edited for the broader context:

Those who declare that America is rotting from the core outward are saying that basic principles of freedom and tolerance render America unworthy of protection in God's eyes.

I don't think most people, even fundamentalists, would agree with that. This is the message that the talking-head shows need to hear, over and over again, until they can't ignore it.
