Brock Peters: 1927-2005
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Actor Brock Peters, best known for his heartbreaking performance as the black man falsely accused of rape in "To Kill a Mockingbird," died Tuesday at his home after battling pancreatic cancer. He was 78.
I have To Kill A Mockingbird on DVD, but haven't sat down to watch it yet. I've never seen it. I bought it largely because I knew it had fantastic performances from Gregory Peck and Brock Peters, and I admired both actors. Peters gave the eulogy at Peck's 2003 funeral.
I knew Brock Peters as Admiral Cartwright in Star Trek IV and Star Trek VI, but when I think of him, I will always remember his multi-season role as Joseph Sisko, crusty 24th-Century New Orleans restauranteur and father of Capt. Benjamin Sisko, in the highly underrated Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
He was in so much more, but Joseph Sisko is who I'll remember the most. Godspeed, Mr. Peters.
