I cahn't see

I think that title only works if you imagine it in Jim Backus's Boston Brahmin accent from It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, but oh well.

I can see, but I've had something in my right eye for the past few days. I dont' think it's a sty. I originally thought it was just the "sleep" I rub out of my eyes every morning, but when I did that on Friday, it was like there was sand underneath my lower eyelid. Mom says it might be a "granulation" that's worsened by allergies, and my sinuses have been stopped up a bit, so that could be it.

It drove me crazy all day Friday to the point of putting ice on my eye to reduce swelling and increase comfort. Saturday was a little better, and Sunday and Monday were a lot better. Unfortunately, it's still tiring my eye - although not sleepy, I'm finding it difficult to keep my eyes open for more than 9 hours at a stretch. It's not like exhaustion and collapsing, but almost like stage hypnosis - when the interval is up, I just can't keep my eyes open. They need to rest.

And so, during Macworld Expo week, although feeling and being incredibly productive, I'm stuck lying down every 8-9 hours or so, and once I do, I sleep for anywhere from 2-3 hours. It's a real bummer when my brain wants to keep going, but on the other hand, my brain is happy enough to shut down as soon as I close my eyes, so maybe it knows something I don't.

I had entertained the notion of heading to our new Apple store by noon to see if they'd show Steve Jobs's keynote live in the store (our normal Big Dish has decided not to turn, so I can't search for a wild feed), but I was tipped off in iChat to take a look outside a few hours ago, and I discovered it was snowing. Right now, Dashboard says it's 30°F outside, but the streets are only wet (not icy) and the high today is supposed to be 44°F.

So, I dunno. I have to put our insightful Aperture vs. Lightroom analysis on hold while I literally rest my eyes. If I'm "Up and Atom" (jiminy jillikers!) before about 10:30 and the roads are clear, maybe I'll give it a shot. If not, there's always plenty to cover from right here at World Headquarters

(People ask me why I don't attend Macworld Expo to cover it. When I don't go, on the first big day of the show, I spend about 10 hours researching all kinds of new products and another 8-10 hours writing about them. If I was in San Francisco, I'd still be expected to do all that, plus spend another 6-8 hours on the show floor. The math doesn't add up. Without at least 2 more writers who can keep up with me at every level, there's no hope of covering Macworld Expo from the show floor. I'd have to be institutionalized afterwards. Not that everyone would think that was a bad idea.)

Can't keep eyes open, must rest, must let system backup…

Update: Tuesday was OK - made it to the city but no one had any of the new, "available today!" items, but faded early. Wednesday was better, and got a lot of good reading and work done. Thursday was pretty crappy. If Friday morning is just as bad, it may be time to see the opthamolololololologicalist.
