I asked my parents last night if it made me a bad person that my 3rd thought upon hearing of Ken Lay's death was…well, pretty much exactly what Dilbert creator Scott Adams said today:

Does it seem suspicious to you that ex-Enron CEO Ken Lay died right before they could put his guilty ass behind bars?

I wonder how many doctors you need to bribe to fake your own death. Is one enough? Or is there some special double-checking that the police do if the guy is heading for prison? I'm sure there's a body, but I wonder if it's his. I have a bad feeling that some pizza delivery guy's last words to his coworkers were "Hey, I have a delivery to that Enron guy's house! Wish me luck!"

My favorite Ken Lay story is that he bought his wife a $200,000 boat while they were already $100 million in debt. His explanation was "It's hard to just turn that kind of lifestyle off." That was the moment I believed his defense – that he was so frickin' stupid he didn't know he was a thief.

I don't wish to speak ill of the dead, but these guys have escaped punishment for their actions for so long that apparently I'm not the only one who had this thought. Adams just had it funnier. And I feel a little better knowing that Charles had similar thoughts.
