Tony Jay dies
Aw, this is very sad. TV Squad says:
You would recognize Jay's voice as much as his face, as he voiced an incredible number of cartoons over the years, including The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Reboot, Spiderman, Teen Titans, Superman, The Mighty Ducks, Gargoyles, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as well as a massive number of videogames: World of Warcraft, X-Men Legends, Lionhearts, various Star Trek games, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and just about every other video game ever made that used a voice. But he had live action roles in TV and movies too, including Lois and Clark, Newhart, The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr., Mr. Belvedere, Twin Peaks, Beauty and the Beast, Eerie, Indiana, Matlock, Murphy Brown, Picket Fences, and The Golden Girls. He was also a Royal Shakespeare Company actor and a singer.
The roles for which I knew him best were as Minister Campio, the protocol-obsessed nobleman who almost married Lwaxana Troi on Star Trek: The Next Generation; as Lex Luthor's man friday Nigel in the first two seasons of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and as the voice of the villainous Frollo in Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. His voice was so rich and distinctive that Jay had seventy credits in just the past ten years (not counting multiple appearances on shows like Lois & Clark), according to IMDB. He even replaced the late Sebastian Cabot as the voice of Shere Khan in Disney's Jungle Book cartoons.
Godspeed, Mr. Jay.
Local politics or sexism?
I never can tell anymore. From the Associated Press:
Retired Maj. Gen. Kathryn Frost dies
By SUZANNE GAMBOA, Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON - Retired Maj. Gen. Kathryn George Frost, who was the highest ranking woman in the Army when she retired last year after a 31-year career, died Friday of breast cancer. She was 57.
Frost, wife of former Rep. Martin Frost, D-Texas, had been battling cancer for four years.
"Kathy was a woman of incredible strength," the former congressman said in a statement. "I will miss her deeply."
The same event as covered by the Dallas Morning News:
Kathryn Frost, wife of former congressman, dies
By RICHARD WHITTLE / The Dallas Morning News
WASHINGTON – Retired Army Maj. Gen. Kathryn George Frost, the wife of former U.S. Rep. Martin Frost, D-Dallas, died Friday after a four-year battle with breast cancer.
Gen. Frost, who commanded the Army and Air Force Exchange Service in Dallas during her final service assignment, was 57. The AAFES is an $8 billion operation that provides retail goods to U.S. troops worldwide.
"She was a highly accomplished Army officer," Mr. Frost said. "She was the senior woman in the Army on active duty when she retired in April of 2005."
Both articles list Gen. Frost's accomplishments, but the Dallas Morning News headline ignores them altogether in favor of mentioning that she was the wife of a former Congressman. That doesn't seem right.
He's real? You're kidding!
No video up at MSNBC as of this posting, but according to the #2 story on tonight's Countdown, the guy in the Chrysler commercials identified as "Dr. Z, Chairman of DaimlerChrysler," really is the head of DaimlerChrysler.
Count me among the 80% of people who thought he was an actor.
