Steve Irwin's "friends" and their priorities
Nowhere in the United States was Steve "The Crocodile Hunter" Irwin more widely seen than on the Animal Planet channel, a cable/satellite channel provided by Discovery Communications (they of the multiple "Discovery" channels). Upon Irwin's tragic death Monday in a freakish stingray attack (the fish's large barbed stinger went through Irwin's heart - the poison had nothing to do with it), Discovery Communications president Billy Campbell released a statement.
See if you can guess which sentence does not belong in this statement, much less in the first paragraph where it actually is:
Statement from Billy Campbell, President, Discovery Networks, U.S. Discovery Communications, Inc.
Our entire company is deeply saddened by the tragic and sudden loss of Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter. Steve was beloved by millions of fans and animal lovers around the world and was one of our planet's most passionate conservationists. He has graced our air since October 1996 and was essential in building Animal Planet into a global brand.
"Wow, what a great marketing asset he was. We'll miss his non-depreciated book value."
Crikey.
