» Saturday, February 7, 2009Congressman Twitters secret trip to Iraq
For security reasons, the congressional delegation led by House Minority Leader John Boehner to Iraq today was supposed to be secret. Everything had been going fine in that regard. Even media outlets which knew of the trip, like the Congressional Quarterly, kept a lid on the news.
That was, until Representative Peter Hoekstra Twittered his arrival into Baghdad. "Just landed in Baghdad. I believe it may be first time I've had bb service in Iraq. 11 th trip here," he sent from his Blackberry.
I don't know if Rep. Hoekstra broke any laws by revealing the trip, but the political blogs are fond of pointing out that such a security lapse is surprising for the Ranking Member of the House Intelligence Committee.
No. No, it's not surprising at all. Dan Boren got named to that committee today, adding to Oklahoma's growing set of political oxymorons, like the Gaylord College of Journalism.
Keep in mind that had a Democratic congressman done this, there would, as I type this, be 24/7 shouting, ranting coverage of the Brooks Brothers Mafia demanding his expulsion and instant cremation. But instead, we'll have Republicans on cable 24/7 blaming Democrats for it, somehow, no matter how nonsensical they have to be. And the cable talking heads will pretend it all makes sense.
