Ignorance is Bliss

Demagogue treats us to this gem:

Via the Carpetbagger we get this new Harris Poll
  • 64 percent believe that Saddam Hussein had strong links to Al Qaeda (up slightly from 62% in November).

  • 47 percent believe that Saddam Hussein helped plan and support the hijackers who attacked the U.S. on September 11, 2001 (up six percentage points from November).

  • 44 percent actually believe that several of the hijackers who attacked the U.S. on September 11 were Iraqis (up significantly from 37% in November).

  • 36 percent believe that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction when the U.S. invaded (down slightly from 38% in November).

As the first three results show, the American people are actually becoming stupider as time passes. In a few years, polls will probably show that many Americans believe that Hussein was responsible for the assassination of JFK.

These numbers have held true for about two years, so here's my question:

Why doesn't MoveOn.org, or another progressive group with a lot of cash, sponsor nationwide television ads merely stating the facts?

Imagine it, viewers of NCIS or JAG or American Idol seeing a quiet 30-second spot that simply states the truth:

  • Saddam Hussein had no links to Al Qaeda

  • Neither Saddam Hussein nor any agent of the former Iraqi government helped plan or support the hijackers who attacked the U.S. on September 11, 2001

  • None of the September 11 hijackers were Iraqis. Fifteen were Saudis.

  • The US, its coalition partners, and the international community combined have not found any evidence that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. They stopped looking months ago.

  • These facts brought to you by MoveOn.org. Informed is better.

Not against any candidate, not against any policy - just informing the country that they may be basing decisions on bad information. Let the wingnuts rage - they know all those are facts, and they desperately want everyone else not to know they're facts. Get them lying in print and on tape. That'll come in handy later.

Seriously - why hasn't anyone done this? It's a pure issue ad - it's not soft money to anyone, especially 45 months before the next presidential election. Why the hell didn't these air in December 2003?
