2004 Update: Although Linotype still offers the FontExplorer CD-ROM with printed type catalog, it costs $13, and I get no sense that it still includes any kind of free font posters. Sorry, Google searchers.

Linotype offers a "FontExplorer" CD with a few thousand locked fonts on it that you can purchase on demand by fax. Realistically, it's easier to buy them on the Internet and download them than to fax and wait for an unlocking code, but the CD has a "Font Explorer" program that lets you find fonts with specific characteristics.

The fun part, though, is that it comes with five free font posters -- two showing all of Linotype's serifs, one for sans serifs, one for dingbats and special fonts, and one showing the fonts added since the last CD. The CD for Mac and Windows, plus printed type catalogs and the five posters, is free from FontHaus at the above URL. There is a $10 shipping charge, but I personally think the posters are pretty cool, and font samples are always nice when done professionally. If you like type, have some for your wall.
