Dan Boren: Proud to be a Democrat?
Dan Boren, or one of his staffers, writing for the Oklahoma Democratic Party:
I'm proud to call myself a member of the party that stands up for veterans, opens doors of opportunity for our children, works for middle-class Americans, and who believes that values are best exhibited by actions and rather than words.
Over at OkieDoke, Mike notes that Boren's pride in being a member of the Democratic Party appears to be contingent upon voting with the Republicans most of the time.
"Dan Boren" for the ODP, again:
For the first six years of the Bush Administration the Republican-controlled Congress abdicated its oversight authority, allowing the administration to do what it wanted with no mechanism for accountability. The Democratic Congress is doing what the American people expect and the constitution requires: asking questions, demanding answers and holding government accountable to the taxpayers.
Dan Boren's actual record on oversight for the Iraq adventure: he's voted to give President Bush a blank check for the war twice now, voting against the supplemental that required withdrawing troops by October 1, and against overriding the president's veto of same bill. That's the same veto that the ODP's own interns wrote about just a week ago:
In my mind, using his veto power on this bill shows yet again that George W. Bush doesn't understand Democracy. In a democratic society, government is run by the people, for the people...nothing about Bush's veto was government by the people. In fact, the people have spoken loud and clear throughout this war. We, as the people, want out! We recognize that our military presence there is not the success that was initially predicted. The amount of time, money and resources that we have put into this useless (oil) war have done nothing but set our nation back. And now we find out that even our outrage (and his 28% approval rating) is not enough to end Bush's crusade.
If you are just as upset about this veto as I am, visit this website to voice your concern to Democratic congressmen, and the President himself.
You're not supposed to be concerned that Oklahoma's only Democratic congressman, Dan Boren, voted to uphold the president's veto on this "undemocratic" bill.
However, you are supposed to be pleased to know that Boren consults with President Bush on the Iraq topic and uses the president's language to blast his fellow Democrats, the ones he's "proud" to serve with.
It's a shame for Rep. Boren that actions actually do speak louder than words.
