Story: Losing the American Bible Society

After several days of Manila funkiness, I finally got this very, very long story from last Saturday posted in two parts, but Manila should make them look like one to you. The American Bible Society has been a force for Good for Christians in this country for nearly 200 years, but now it looks like the right wing has taken it over, making it just another strident evangelical group. A group that was founded to provide Bibles "without doctrinal note or comment" is now spending money to advocate specific doctrines, and it's very sad.

This has a lot of personal stuff about Bible translations and their commercial implications, reading the Bible, and the importance of scholarship in faith that so many are fighting tooth and nail. It's not the usual kind of snarky politically-oriented stuff you find here, but it means a lot to me.
